Looking for a London Throat Specialist?

A wide range of conditions can affect the mouth and throat, including very common problems such as a chronic cough, infections and snoring. As well as possibly causing pain and discomfort, throat problems can affect people on a wider level too, impacting on sleep, swallowing and breathing, for example. For ongoing or troublesome symptoms, a mouth and throat specialist can help get to the root of the problem so that appropriate treatments can be arranged.

At 150 Harley Street, our team of mouth and throat specialists can arrange examinations and any necessary diagnostic investigations and tests for a range of throat problems. Our London private throat specialists can also provide a range of treatments, including throat surgery.

What is the throat?

The throat has many functions. It helps with the initial stages of digestion and with our ability to form speech. The mouth or oral cavity is the ante-chamber of the throat. It contains the visible part of the tongue, the teeth, gums and the hard palate. The throat is divided into several sections:

  • The Oropharynx – containing the base of the tongue, the soft palate including the uvula and the tonsils.
  • The Larynx – containing the epiglottis, vocal cords including other structures necessary to generate voice and protect the airway/lungs.
  • The Hypopharynx – the lower part of the throat which leads into the gullet (oesophagus).

Throat problems

Sore throat is one of the most common symptoms experienced by children and adults. Tonsillitis is a common cause of sore throat and the ENT surgeons in our team of London mouth and throat specialists can offer surgery to remove the tonsils (tonsillectomy) in patients that suffer repeated and/or serious infections.

Voice issues are also managed effectively by our ENT surgeons who can undertake a procedure to visualise the voice box in the out-patient clinic.  This procedure (flexible laryngoscopy) is done by passing a fine telescope through the nose in order to visualise the voice box as it sits in the larynx.  ENT surgeons at our Practice can offer LASER surgery and where indicated, they work closely with skilled speech therapists to enable the restoration of good quality voice.

Here is a list of common problems affecting structures within the throat:

  • Tonsillitis
  • Voice problems
  • Cough and throat clearing problems
  • Acid reflux
  • Sore throat
  • Throat cancer
  • Tonsil stones
  • Swallowing problems
  • Snoring
