Mr Abir Bhattacharyya

MS FACS FRCS FRCS(ORL-HNS)

I am an established Consultant ENT Surgeon with over 20 years’ experience in NHS and private practice in central and northeast London. I have a specialist ENT practice in the independent sector with a wide referral base and treat ear, nose and throat conditions in adults and children.
I specialise in treating otological (ear) conditions for both adults and children and deal with referrals from other ENT consultants for the management of complex otological (ear) diseases. This includes assessment and treatment including surgical management of hearing loss, e.g. stapedectomy for otosclerosis, ossiculoplasty, bone anchored hearing aids and surgery for cholesteatoma.

I also lead and run tertiary referral multidisciplinary voice clinics with speech therapists for the management of voice disorders in the NHS and independent sector. I have carried out a number of microsurgical and laryngeal framework procedures to improve vocal function.
I have a special interest in treating conditions affecting the nose and sinuses. I have extensive experience in the management of sinus disease and surgical treatment of sinusitis with functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

I have a pivotal role in educational leadership as Training Programme Director for surgeons in London and Deputy Director for Medical Education. As a clinical academic, I have published extensively and have written an undergraduate textbook in the specialty, highly commended at the BMA Medical Book of the year awards and edited two international postgraduate textbooks on Laryngology as a peer determined marker of eminence in the field.
Over a 20-year period I have performed over 1500 complex ear procedures (treatment for perforated ear drums, removal of cholesteatoma and mastoid surgery, implants for improvement in hearing), a large number of endoscopic sinus surgery and related rhinological (nasal) procedures to improve sinus and nasal function, and many laryngeal procedures for diagnosis and improvement of voice, speech and laryngeal function. I regularly teach and demonstrate surgical techniques to national and international surgical trainees through surgical workshops, courses and educational meetings.
I have been the Associate Director of Medical Education (2009) and Royal College Surgical Tutor at Whipps Cross University Hospital since 2010. In 2015 I was appointed by London Deanery/UCLP to a senior educational leadership position as Training Programme Director (Core Surgery) for London. I was appointed Deputy Director of Medical Education at Barts Health in 2017.

In addition to my clinical work I am an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Barts and the London Medical School and teach medical students. I am also involved in postgraduate education, teaching and training and a faculty member and course tutor/organiser for postgraduate courses in otolaryngology in UK and abroad.
